Going to the dentist is extremely stressful for a lot of people, but it doesn’t have to be! With sedation dentistry, we can help patients with any degree of dental phobia become relaxed and calm while in the chair, helping their appointments quickly flow by. Sedation dentistry in our Eugene, OR dental office can be used to help patients through any type of procedure, so if you are interested in using it at your next appointment, be sure to give us a call to explore your options.
With this form of sedation, we can help a patient start feeling better before they even step foot into our dental office. That’s because they will be prescribed a pill to take at home on the day of their appointment. By the time they sit in the chair, they should already be deeply relaxed. The patient will remain awake and be able to respond to our team, but time will seem to fly by, and the appointment will be over before someone can say, “Wait--That’s it?!”
Oral conscious sedation is a form of dental sedation that sees the patient use anti-anxiety medication before a procedure in order to make them more comfortable. A variety of medications can be used for OCS, and they all serve the same purpose: to calm the patient’s mind so they are able to undergo treatment while minimizing stress and fear.
After having a conversation with Dr. Sutter and you both agreeing that oral conscious sedation would be right for you, he will prescribe you the medication. You will be advised to either take it at home on the day of your appointment, or you may wait until you’re in our office. Treatment will begin only after it has taken effect. Because of the strength of the sedative, it is recommended that you organize to have a trusted person drive you to and from our practice. The effects of the medication will last for several hours after your visit, but you should feel completely normal by the next morning at the latest.
Oral conscious sedation is recommended for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety or those who need extensive care, have a sensitive gag reflex, or have issues sitting for extended periods of time. If you’re the type of person who gets nervous just thinking about the dentist, or if you have put off treatment because of anxiety, then OCS is for you. Prior to prescribing the medication, Dr. Sutter and our team will take a brief medical history and ask about any other medications you are currently taking so we can make sure this approach is both effective and safe.
