During October, most people are thinking about pumpkin spice treats and spooky costumes. But did you know that it is also Dental Hygiene Awareness Month? That’s right — it is the perfect time to evaluate your habits to determine if you are doing all you can to maintain a clean and healthy mouth. What are some specific things you should do to take care of your smile? This blog post explains.
Brush Your Teeth At least Twice a Day
Here are some reminders to make your brushing routine as effective as possible:
- Be gentle — pressing too hard with your toothbrush could harm your gums and tooth enamel.
- Wait at least 30 minutes after you consume acidic foods before you brush your teeth.
- Use a soft-bristled brush.
- Do not forget about the backs of your teeth and the area along your gumline.
- Try to brush for about two minutes total, spending 30 seconds on each quadrant of your mouth.
Do Not Forget to Floss
You should try to floss your teeth at least once a day, preferably before you brush in the evening. Start out with about 18 inches of floss, and wrap it around your middle fingers. As you move from tooth to tooth, roll the floss so you are always using a clean section. Remember to be gentle; you should never “snap” the floss between your teeth.
If it is difficult for you to floss due to mobility problems or braces, ask your dental team for guidance. They can provide pointers that will help you clean between your teeth with as little fuss as possible.
Consider Using a Mouth Rinse
Mouth rinses are not substitutes for brushing and flossing, but they can enhance your oral hygiene routine. Choose a product that fits your needs. For example, if you are prone to cavities, you might need a mouthwash with fluoride in it. If you struggle with gum disease, you might need a product that is geared toward periodontal health.
Drink Plenty of Water
Sugary treats are abundant during this time of year. After you indulge in some candy or a sweet latte, remember to sip on some water. It will rinse away food particles and bacteria that could otherwise cling to your teeth and contribute to decay.
Visit Your Dentist
Has it been more than six months since your last professional dental cleaning? If so, now is the time to get an appointment on the books. A hygienist can remove tartar from your teeth (tartar is a hard substance that is impossible to remove with at-home oral hygiene tools). They can also polish your teeth and give you personalized tips for caring for your mouth. Additionally, your dentist will examine your teeth and gums and let you know if there are any developing problems that need to be addressed.
How are your dental hygiene habits? If you know there is room for improvement, now is the time to take needed action.
